Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is appointed as DG of World Trade Organization

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has been formally announced as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Via an official announcement made by the World Trade Organization (WTO) on social media, Dr Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed as the next WTO's Director-General. The organization tweeted, “BREAKING: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala from Nigeria is appointed as the next WTO Direcetor-General. Dr Okonjo-Iweala makes history as the first woman and the first African to lead the WTO. Her term starts on the 1st of March 2021.”

Dr. Okonjo Iweala, with this appointment, is the first woman to ever lead the Switzerland-based institution and the first African citizen to be appointed the role.
