The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to launch three new national identity cards in May this year, aiming to provide them to about 104 million citizens across the country.
The National Identity Management Commission plans to issue three new national identity cards:
- A bank-enabled National ID card
- A social intervention card
- An optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card
The Identity Commission unveiled plans to launch a multipurpose national identity card on Friday. It explained that the identity solution was equipped with payment capability for all social and financial services.
The Technical Adviser, Media, and Communications to the Director-General of NIMC, Ayodele Babalola, disclosed these in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday. He said Nigerians would get the three national ID cards within one or two months of the launch.
He, however, added the launch date was subject to approval from the presidency.
